Exchange Online limited to 45 mail rules

If you get a large volume of email on a daily basis like I do – then Outlook rules are your saviour. But what happens when you go too far?

Well, a little known limitation of Exchange Online is that there is a limit of 45 rules based on the Exchange rules quota of 256KB. If you created any more than 45 rules – the new rules would simply disappear without warning.

Unfortunately this is a limitation that can’t be changed by Office 365 administrators – however you are in luck: this quota can be increased by logging a case with the Microsoft Online Services support team.

It’s expected in a future update that administrators will be able to increase this limitation through the magic of PowerShell!
